What is Website Ranking?

What is Website Ranking? It is natural for people to stick numbers to things. In most cases, they do this to compare and contrast them with other similar things. Websites follow the same logic.
They are no exception. Every webmaster would want to compare and contrast his or her website with that of a competitor. The best way to that is through website ranking. Website ranking is just a process of giving positions to websites starting from the best at the top to the least. One of the most well-known website ranking systems is the Alexa traffic Rankings platform.

Website ranking aims to show how a website is doing relative to all other sites on the web over a certain period of time.

The Alexa traffic Rank system is a subsidiary of Amazon.com and it specializes in providing commercial web traffic data gathered through a number of toolbars and web browser extensions. Alexa website traffic Rank is a metric that ranks websites in order of popularity or how well they have been doing in the last 3 months.

How website ranking occurs

Most website ranking programs will calculate the rank of a website using a 'combination' of the estimated average daily unique visitors to the site and the estimated number of page views on the site over a defined period. Alexa uses this system and uses information collected from the past 3 months. The site with the highest combination of unique visitors and page views is ranked as the number one website.

The data used for website ranking is collected from a subset of internet users using one of 25,000 browser extensions for Google Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer, individually or a combination of two or more.

There is an algorithm that will then correct for various potential biases and will attempt to compensate for visitors who might not be in the program's measurement panel. In addition, the algorithm will normalize the data based on the geographical location of visitors.

Viewing your rank

In order to view your website's rank, you can simply go to the official website of the company for instance the official Alexa website. Once you are there, you can type in your full domain and hit return. There may be other important metrics on the website that you can also browse through.

Popular websites that are ranked through website ranking receive over and above a certain level of traffic. These are well-established sites. A website that approaches the number one rank will have more accurate traffic rankings. On the other hand, a website that has a lower ranking will most often than not have low traffic and rank lower even in traffic rankings.
